The increasing involvement of academic researchers, research teams and educators with industry and private entrepreneurial ventures has raised the potential for conflict of interest.
These conflicts arise from an individual’s opportunities to benefit financially from the outcome of his/her research or other activities conducted as a University researcher, educator, or as part of a University research team.
UM’s “Conflict of Interest, Conflict of Commitment, Foreign Influence, and Institutional Conflict of Interest Policy” addresses institutional vulnerabilities with attention to Conflict of Interest and Foreign Influence. Click here for a PDF copy, or click here to view on Policystat (requires login). The policy is intended to uphold objectivity in scholarly activities by establishing clear standards for the review of disclosed interests. By requiring investigators, faculty, trainees, students, staff, and subcontractors to disclose interests related to their institutional responsibilities, the policy ensures a reasonable expectation that the design, conduct, and reporting of such activities will remain free from bias stemming from financial or obligatory conflicts of interest.
